MSB Demographics

In separate studies, BIS and Aston University have investigated a number of demographic characteristics of MSBs and compared them to those of smaller and larger enterprises. BIS have used the Inter-departmental Business register (IDBR) and Aston University has used the ONS’s Business Structures Database (BSD), a longitudinal version of the IDBR. The strength of the IDBR and BSD are their near universal coverage of all firms in the UK, albeit for a limited range of firm characteristics (employment, turnover, location and industry sector).

BIS analysis from the Inter-departmental Business register (IDBR) broken down by a range of MSB and non-MSB turnover size categories (2010 or 2011), includes:

  • Counts of enterprises broken down by industry, region and limited to the 'private sector'
  • Employment and turnover broken down by region and industry
