Mutual Recognition Regulation
In the situation where an article is rejected for hallmarking a reject report will be supplied to the customer. In the reject report the Assay Office will detail why the article cannot be hallmarked. These could be a number of factors including the complete article, a component or the solder used being below recognised fineness. Base metal plating or the combination of metals which are indistinguishable from one another will result in rejects. Under Article 6.1 of the Mutual Recognition Regulation the customer has 20 working days to submit comments and to instruct the Assay Office how to proceed, in writing.
If a customer wishes to appeal against any final decision they should write to the British Hallmarking Council with full details.
The Assay Offices will report all rejects which are not re- submitted for hallmarking to BIS (The Government Department for Business, Innovation & Skills) for monitoring.
