Equipment regulation
NMO has responsibility, under the Weights and Measures Act, for regulating measuring equipment used for trade.
The rationale for regulating equipment is that the accuracy of quantity for a large number of individual transactions can be guaranteed by ensuring the accuracy of the equipment making the measure. In this way effective consumer protection can be achieved without reliance upon checking of individual transactions. However, there is an alternative view that the regulation of the transaction alone would provide adequate protection for both business and the consumer.
