Product Regulations
The Department is responsible for regulations relating to cosmetics, lighters and other products and chemicals listed below.
Local authority trading standards departments have primary responsibility for day-to-day enforcement of safety legislation. For more information about enforcement, see our page on consumer safety enforcement. (link)

Aerosol Dispensers
Aerosol dispensers under the scope of the Aerosol Dispensers Regulations 2009 [Statutory Instrument 2009 No. 2824] must comply with these Regulations by 29th April 2010.
Child Safety and toys
Hood cords, bunk beds and prams and pushchairs are subject to specific safety regulations.
All toys supplied in the UK must meet the requirements of the Toys (Safety) Regulations 1995 and bear the CE marking and the name and address of the person who first placed the toy on the market. Magnetic toys placed on the market must meet minimum standards for the magnet and contain a warning.
Cosmetics
All cosmetic products supplied in the UK, whether for consumer or professional use, must comply with the Cosmetic Products (Safety) Regulations 2008 (as amended). A guide to the Cosmetics Products (Safety)Regulations 2008 explains all aspects of the regulations.
Dimethylfumarate (DMF)
Products containing DMF are prohibited from being placed or made available on the market. Trading Standards have been directed to enforce these requirements using powers available to them under The General Product Safety Regulations 2005.

Flammability
Nightware sold in the UK must comply with The Nightwear (Safety) Regulations 2005. Children's nightwear must also meet the European standard BS EN 14878.
The Furniture and Furnishings (Fire) (Safety) Regulations 1988 (as amended in 1989 and 1993) set levels of fire resistance for domestic upholstered furniture, furnishings and other products containing upholstery.
Disposable cigarette lighters supplied in the UK must comply with the Commission Decision on Lighters of 11 May 2006. The Decision also removed all novelty lighters from the UK market.
